meyer lemons seem to be popping up everywhere. a seasonal treat that seems to be extending its season this year, Meyers are the thin-skinned, sweet & vibrant sister of our year round Eureka and Lisbon lemons. The Cinderalla to the puckery step-sisters, who—cooking wisdom will have us note—just need a lot more sugar to be delicious. Anyway, this Cinderella has no problems being invited to the ball. Your table.
these lemons (like ladies) were considered ornamental long before they took leading roles in the menus of grand cafes and home kitchens. In 1905, the US Department of Agriculture hired Frank Meyer as an “agricultural explorer,” and three years later, he “discovered” the Meyer lemon in Peking (now Beijing), where the beautiful little trees served the decorative rather than culinary arts. NPR calls Martha Stewart “the fairy godmother of this Cinderella story,” and when the Hampton’s grand dame of “lifestyle” gave Meyers starring roles in her recipes, demand soared. The PR is not over-blown: they are divine little orbs. But you don’t have to tell people you heard it from Martha—you heard it from me!
