how to read the radical muffin blog (and other rad muff writings)

Recipes ganesh and apron altar

This website is first and foremost about getting some wisdom and how-to’s on cooking and eating up on the net – freely accessible to busy folks wherever they may be. Though I be in Brooklyn, so my local, in-season ingredients may not be local or in-season for you.

Each posting includes recipes. The navigation bar on the right will take you to all the recipes, skipping the rambling, if you click on “recipes.” It lists feature ingredients too so click what you have on hand to bring up parts of the blog that will give you some ideas about what to do with that arugula, beet, or carrot.

All the recipes are vegetarian, many are vegan. I practice ethical eating, but my kitschy kitten self conspires with the historian to gather retro recipes for inexplicable “foods” like Coca-Cola Cake. Also – I have a thing for diners with white haired servers, mismatched silverware, and all-day breakfast.

Narratives

Each post begins with a rambling, a story, a musing, a poetic waxing. Each writing is honest and rendered with a love of words that I hope, combined, generates a compelling offering.

This blog is in the tradition of women making notations in their cooking journals, recording the weather, their garden’s progress, the events of the day. Their private, public experiences mixed-in with their recipes for daily dinners, holiday feasts, and bake sale contributions.

‘Zines sunday brunch apron

Radical Muffin started as aprons, as a label for aprons pieced together out of second-hand fabrics. When the aprons were ready to make their way from my tiny bedroom in DC to some craft fairs, it didn’t seem right to send them into the world with empty pockets so I wrote recipes on cards. All recycled cards: note cards bought for change at thrift stores, old timey post cards, and envelopes from hotels in roadside towns across America. Every recipe had a story with it- more like a bit of a story, a passing window. Sometimes a poem.

When I hit critical mass of poems and recipes, we created have sex in the kitchen, the first Radical Muffin ‘zine. The second edition will be coming out before the new year (that is the plan, but remember, I am a sagittarious).

The ‘zines were, and hopefully will be again, all poems and recipes and hand drawn bits.
